Why are we called to fast?

Fasting is more than a discipline of abstinence; it is a sacred invitation to align our hearts with God’s purposes. By setting aside physical nourishment, we make room for spiritual sustenance, drawing closer to the Father. This devotional explores the biblical foundations of fasting, its transformative power, and practical ways to engage in this sacred practice.

Fasting is a powerful act of worship, often misunderstood or overlooked in today’s culture. Yet, scripture is clear that fasting is a vital spiritual discipline. Jesus assumed His followers would fast, saying in Matthew 6:16-17, “And when you fast…” not if. Fasting is not about earning favor or showcasing piety; it is a way to humble ourselves before God, seeking Him with greater focus and dependence.

When we fast, we create space for God to work in and through us. Isaiah 58:6 reveals the heart of true fasting: “No, this is the kind of fasting I want: Free those who are wrongly imprisoned; lighten the burden of those who work for you. Let the oppressed go free, and remove the chains that bind people.” Fasting aligns us with God’s heart for justice, mercy, and freedom—not only for ourselves but for those around us.
